Coco Gelato – Food Review

Coco Gelato is an Italian dessert restaurant set right in the heart of Cardiff. I decided that I fancied trying something new, something that was not in the heart of Cardiff city centre, and whilst driving we happened to pass by and decided to give it a go.

Coco Gelato’s interior was amazing, the decor is a modern but stylish and quite classy ‘ice cream parlour’ feel to it. It has a mixture of wooden benches, separate tables and raised tables. Boasting an variety of ice cream flavours; from Kinder Bueno to Kiwi fruit they have a flavour to suit everyone. A few of the flavours I saw intrigued me such as ‘parma violets’. I’ve had parma violet cake before and it tested… very different so I’m not quite if an ice cream would taste any better, or any worse.

Of course Coco Gelato offer a wide range of different desserts, from normal cake to Pastel De Nata which is a traditional Portuguese custard tart, so crepes and waffles ( both in savoury and dessert form, and of course your traditional cakes.

We both began our meal with a tea, Dan chose the traditional English Breakfast while I chose the green tea. I’ve never been a fan of tea and coffee, I still don’t understand how people find them refreshing, but green tea I can handle.

Dan chose the chocolate with a dollop of Vanilla ice cream on the side. A wise choice.  Dan asked if he could have it heated which to me sounds perfect. You can’t really beat a hot chocolate cake and Vanilla ice cream. The filling was oozing and melting. It was a glorious sight!

I decided, as per usual, I wanted to try something I’ve never had before. Scanning the menu I found ‘Peanut Butter Jelly Time’ and I’ve never ever tried peanut butter jelly in my life. The dessert had a waffle based with Banana, Peanut Butter, Jam and Nutella and was inspired by the characters Stewie Griffin and Brian Girffin from Family Guy. I was really excited to try it, having something I’ve never eaten before is always exciting.

Unfortunately, Peanut Butter and Jam is not a mix I particularly enjoy. The Jam seems was too sweet tasting to be together with the likes of Peanut Butter and Nutella, or maybe the mixture of waffle didn’t help. It saddens me that I didn’t like the mixture but it was still nice, it’s just Peanut Butter and Jelly isn’t for me.

Would I go there again? Of course I would but I would go all out and have a main dish and a dessert. Next time I’ll go back I’ll try one of those savoury crepes and at least three of the ice cream flavours. Should definitely be able to handle that.

xx
