Catrin is a singer of London based band Tinned Wild and is also one of my dearest dearest friends. I’ve known for 8 years now and we’ve been through some amazing adventures together, especially during my drinking days, but now we’ve calmed down and created nests for ourselves 4 hours from each other. Cat is living in London with her partner Jamie who I have blogged about before. They both formed the band together and are slowly making a name for themselves within close circles of the London district.
Of course, just like myself whose trying to crack the blogging and photography world Catrin also works in London full-time however I can’t see that carrying on anytime soon, she is destined for great things.
Before Christmas Catrin came to visit my area for the day. We hadn’t seen each other in a while so it was pleasant to catch up! We ate and ate and ate some more and just bummed around town all day. We went to Cardiff’s most popular Hostel Bunkhouse for cider and then decided to head home to devour even more food and have some bare chats. My housemates Helen and Katrin joined and we all just chilled on my bed, blasting our favourite tunes before hitting the hey. The next day ate lunch and parted. A short but lovely trip!
I decided to interview Catrin via e-mail about Tinned Wild, London living and of course her future. Here is how it all went down;
1. What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
Well, I can’t really talk for everyone but for me I see it as a hobby, something that I enjoy doing in my spare time. It’s something that I love doing and if it becomes a career that would be an absolute dream!
2. Where do you see yourself and the band heading in a year or two? What are your current plan?
At the moment we’re working on releasing our single ‘Blacklight’. This means we haven’t really been gigging much, more recording and rehearsing! In the next couple of months we hope to be gigging regularly around London and the rest of the UK and eventually record an album.
3. What do you think are the typical mistakes people make when trying to pursue this career?
Umm…not sure, we’re probably doing it all wrong ourselves haha.
4. Women are judged a lot quicker than in men in most industries. Would you say the same thing applies for female singers? Do you feel more pressure to perform better because of these circumstances?
I think the industry is a very male orientated and this can be hard thing for women in the industry. For me, I haven’t yet experienced this but I’m sure I will do in the future. I see myself as a performer and to me gender is irrelevant, for others it isn’t but how I good/bad my performance is is not down to me being a woman.
5. Who would you say is your inspiration for your love of music?
AHHHHHHH the list would go on for pages and pages!! I love music, absolutely obsessed and so are the people around me, I am constantly surrounded by music. I love the punk era in terms of strong front people for example Poly Styrene, Siouxie Soux and Ari Up. I love how they haven’t got a so called ‘good voice’ but just great voices and personalities. I could talk about this for hours so I won’t bore you, but my list of influences get bigger every day as I discover more and more great artists and bands.
6. Ever thought of creating music in the welsh language?
I would absolutely love to include the Welsh language in our music. I think it would be such a great thing to do, just look at the Super Furry Animals. There’s an artist called Gwenno who released an album called ‘Y Ddydd Olaf’ in Wlesh last year and it is fantastic. It’s great to see people like her getting her music out there and getting played outside of Wales.
8. Describe your music style.
Such a hard question really. As I said earlier, all of us in the band are music lovers and we listen to all kinds of music. Some of our stuff has a punkier edge and other songs sound more ‘baggy’ but at the end of the day, what we want to create are a good pop songs that people will enjoy.
9. Are you open to collaborations and with who?
I don’t think we’ve got to that point yet, we’re very open minded mind
Just a FYI: Cat is the singer in London based5 piece Tinned Wild. From Wales and Devon looking to create good music. They are recording with Hang Yourself Records.
