Food Review: Captain’s Wife

We decided to return to Captain’ Wife one breezy afternoon. We have been there before but I didn’t have my camera with me but since I’m never without anymore there was no excuse. The service is always pleasant and the bar staff are always welcome and friendly so I knew that wouldn’t  be a problem. It all depended on the food now. It’s reputation hang in the balance of the grub.

Starters
We decided on a sharer since we wanted to keep room for our main meal so we chose the tear, share and dip cheesy garlic bread which is a hand rolled focaccia dough, filled with a melted cheddar and garlic sauce – ideal for dipping. We had already tried one of these at The Travellers rest (read article here) so I thought this would be a good time to compare. The garlic bread was glorious on the inside, cheese melting all over the soft dough when it was cut in half. It was incredibly crispy on the outside when, if my memory serves me well, the outside of the tear and share garlic bread in The Travellers Rest was slightly softer and easier to chew. So the outer shell might have let them down but that’s not saying it was bad I just preferred it softer. It was hot too (well obviously since it just came out of the oven. I KNOW THAT!!) but if you ever find yourself in the situation you cannot resist a tear and share garlic bread, give it a few minutes to calm down.

Main Course
I decided to be adventurous and try a dish that wasn’t burgers or an asian based meal. So I opted for hand battered halloumi which is covered in cask ale batter, served with seasoned chips, mushy peas and gherkin relish. It made such a change to try something else. I’ve only had halloumi once before and I really liked it so I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.

Dan opted for the safe vintage hunter’s chicken which was a chargrilled chicken breast, smothered in barbecue sauce, topped with sweetcure bacon and smoked cheddar, served with confit tomato, home-made beer battered onion rings, beer battered mushrooms, seasoned chips and peas. All the batter!! it looked amazing and Dan looked like he was enjoying mouthful!

Opinion: I was full and the location and relaxed atmosphere added to the perfect meal. I’ll definitely be returning again soon.
