So while visiting a wedding venue (I’m not getting married by the way, I’m doing the photography) my stomach started making the rumblies, that only food could satisfy so Dan I got in the car and went on a drive to find the perfect place that would make some quick food. Luckily for us there was a old fashioned country cottage round the corner from the venue called the Travellers Rest that looked perfect. I’m always up for trying new places and according to Dan, who has been there before, the food is ‘alright’ so we made camp and went inside.
It’s everything a cottage turned pub should look like old images on the walls, all the old interior still in tact, dim lighting, perfect for the cold sunny day we were having. Since I’m not eating sugar we decided to share one or two starters with a bowl of cheesy chips and finish the meal with a cheese board. Not much sugar in that is there? Perfect!
For our starter we ordered a tear, share and dip cheesy garlic bread which is a hand-rolled focaccia dough, filled with melted cheddar and garlic sauce and also it’s suitable for vegetarians. This was absolutely cheesy and it was melted to perfection. A lot of dough and for someone who is on a strict low-carb diet I felt extremely bloated and that doesn’t include the cheesy fries so you can imagine how I felt after demolishing those as well. Food baby game strong let me tell you.
Another meal we shared was the spicy calamari and chorizo salad. Now when they salad they meant a big massive leaf and that was it which is fine but I don’t call a lettuce leaf a salad, there should be at least two piece of lettuce to be considered a salad. The calamari was fried and dusted with chorizo seasoning with chipotle jam. I love calamari and it tasted delicious with some hot spices on top but what really made this dish for me was the chipotle jam. Absolutely scrumptious, so sweet as well like sweet chilli but nicer. I had to ask if they bought it in and they do (Huzzah) however the company they buy from only sells to restaurants and companies (BOOOOOO!!!).
So far so good. Feeling slightly full so we wait 10-15 minutes for our dessert of cheese and crackers. The cheese board included Somerset Brie, Cropwell Bishop Stilton and Isle of Man Cheddar, served with onion marmalade, celery, grapes, oatcakes and bath Cheddar biscuits. The brie was lovely as well as the Isle of Man Cheddar, but the stilton was too strong for me. As you can gather from what I’ve said I have a very beige palette at the moment so mild foods are my favourite. So I allowed Dan to have all the Stilton. Luckily he liked it. I haven’t had grapes in a while because of sugar intake so it was nice to have my favourite fruit again.
All in all a lovely meal with some lovely dishes and service. The travellers Rest is great for that quick meal. I tell you what though the dessert menu looked amazing!! Once I allow myself sugar again I shall definitely go there for a cake!
